My guest today is Anupriya Gupta who belongs to that generation of Idiots (the proud ones though), who did their engineering first and then decided on what they actually wanted to do. She completed her MBA in Human Resources and worked in the corporate world for 8 years, before taking a professional break. A mom by day and a reader/writer by night, Anupriya is a die-hard romantic. She can be found in the dot com world at her blog www.mommytincture.com , which contains her ranting about her experiences in her various roles as a mother, daughter, wife and foremost a human being, all churned together. It is also her outlet to the world where she doles out loads of gyaan on self-improvement and relationship management.
Her debut paperback novel – Because I Promised…to lock my heart away released last month to raving reviews.

Last year when one of my fellow blogger’s informed me about the existence of a month-long writing challenge NaNoWriMo, somehow my seven-year itch of writing a romance novel gave me a couple of sleepless nights. And then I decided to jump into the challenge with my feet first and typed my way to glory for the next 30 days. The result was a coherent story that seemed fine to me, but not perfect enough to approach the publishers for the next logical step. I put that manuscript aside and got on with life.
But remember the Alchemist theory? Here I was with a complete manuscript, not knowing what to do with it and come December, I get my Kindle Unlimited subscription and stumble upon an entire class of ebooks in Romance genre that were published by Indian authors. The only thing that I found eerie about these books was that they weren’t published with the traditional publishing houses. At least not the ones I was aware of. A little research led me into a new trend that has taken the publishing industry through a revolution of sorts. This trend is known as ‘Indie Publishing’.
The word ‘Indie’ primarily being a short form for ‘Independent’.
In the last 11 months, I have read some 40 odd books by at least a dozen of these Indie Authors and have really been impressed as well as inspired by some of them. Having come up with my own book as an Indie Author last month, I wish to take this opportunity to make a dedication to those Indie authors (in no specific order of preference) who I feel are worth a study.
Intrigued? Pin it for later!
Sapna Bhog
I like Sapna Bhog for her strong characters and the larger than life canvases her stories are set up in. Her books Take A Chance On Me and Lets Start With Forever have garnered rave reviews owing to their gripping plots. I am eagerly awaiting her third book in the series which according to her is due for release in another 2-3 months. As an author she aims to bring a culture of happy reading through her stories.

Preethi Venugopal
Preethi Venugopal is one of the warmest and nicest persons I have come across on the social media among the writers’ block. Her beautiful heart reflects in her stories that are touch ones heart and one falls in love with her characters almost instantly. In each of her stories, the lady protagonist is a balanced mix of hues of strong, insecure, ambitious, homely, friendly and aloof all amalgamated into one. It’s amazing how she churns out her stories to reflect a fresh perspective of love each and every time.

MV Kasi & PG Van
These two ladies who write under the veil of their pen names are taking the indie publishing scene by a storm. One best seller after another has become a way of life for them. What makes them stand out from everyone is that they have set themselves out to bring the dark side of their heroines. Until I had read their books, the proposition of rendering such dark shades to the female protagonist was very scary and risky to me. But then these ladies have changed it all for me. I have to mention here that I was almost possessed by their protagonist ‘Sabitha’ of ‘Bound By Hatred’ from the Sigham bloodline series. You have to read the book to understand why.

Sundari Venkatraman
When you come across an indie author who has churned out 42 titles in last 4 years, you should hold no doubts about her passion for writing. Her forte is love stories with happy endings and she has her way with how she portrays the insecurities of her lady protagonists. Her heroes are heroes in true sense and you are more likely than not fall in love with them instantly. While she is sometimes criticized for focusing her stories around eroticism when she could do much more with her characters, she successfully imbibes local flavor in each of her stories depicting how the culture affects peoples’ lives.

Ruchi Singh
‘Crisp’ is what I would call her writing style. She spins her stories at such a pace that there actually is no time for the reader to anticipate what’s gonna hit them. Though romance is her forte, but her latest release ‘Bodyguard’ is a suspense thriller that will keep you on your tenterhooks throughout. Contemporary Romance is what I would actually categorise her stories as.

Adite Banerjee
Now Adite Banerjee was one of those writer’s who got published with M&B India some years back and them emerged as an indie author republishing their book. Her writing style is almost poetic and hooks you from the word go. She is another author who I really feel glad to have connected to on the social media. It feels almost like a privilege.

Check out my Guestpost about Solo Travel that I did on Anupriya’s blog – I would love to see some feedback on it, especially from women travellers.
I do spot a couple of popular ones out here- Preeti, Sundari, and Ruchi. However I am not much of an Indie author fan and have conscously kept away from them. Looks like it is time I gave it another look??? What say? :))
A nice post. I like the profile of Anupriya Gupta which was in great detail. It is not easy to manage so many hats yet become a writer. Hats off to her.
Well, some of them would surely be interesting enough for you. But you have to remember they are all the romance chic-lit genre. I have been reading a lot of chic-lits this year for the simple reason that I wanted to figure how the chic-lit genre is doing. (Book research you know ;))
Thanks Shalz for having me on your blog. There are many more indie authors who are doing some amazing work, but these ones are the ones I have read in the past one year and have been blown over by some of their stories.
Thanks for doing such an awesome post Anu; its doing quite well and its being liked a lot by my readers 🙂
Not being on the Indian scene I must confess I haven’t heard of these authors. Romance is not a genre I really read but I’m sure this will appeal to those who do
I have known 3 authors from this list by the way of their social media presence and bloggers reviewing their books. I haven’t read any of the Indie authors and do not like the chic-lit genre which I know is quite popular. The characters in this genre are much modern in comparison to me who is middle aged yet ancient.
Thanks for this lovely post Anupriya. I like how you have explained the term Indie here before enumerating the list.
I am not a fan of Indian authors on not have I read any of these authors you listed here. Though I do know of most of them. In fact Adite used to be my Neighbour many many moons ago – what a small world no?
I have read most of these authors and agree with your thoughts on them! And I simply adore Ruchi, as a person, and a writer. Her stories always always connect with me, and I love them.
And pssstt…if you liked Bodyguard, there is a companion novel coming out this month that you will love!
I like your list, Anupriya. Ruchi Singh is one writer I have been meaning to read for sometime, may be will pick it up this year. The other writers you have mentioned, I am guilty of not reading them. Time to widen my horizons.
