As a child I grew up to be a loner. I found friends in the imaginary world of books and soon enough we were inseparable. I would sleep with a torch, light it and read the moment my parents would go to sleep. I would read in the car, train, bus, under the bed… you name it I have done it. So of course, this continued when I was eating too. To date I eat and read at the same time though now TV competes for some of this time too.

My issue is further compounded by the fact that I normally eat alone; which means laying the table for one is just not the scene. I end up eating on my couch in front of the TV.

And over a period of time, I have learnt one thing – eating with divided attention, leads me to eat more. I am unable to figure out when I am full and end up overeating which leads to an uneasy feeling all around.

So, I have devised a simple trick (no, not given up reading) of filling my plate only once and with half the quantity that I would normally eat. Then when I want to go for seconds, I sit on my couch for five more minutes, begging laziness and then if I still feel like it – I head for the kitchen a second time around and put some food in my plate. 6/10 times the urge to eat more passes by while I am dithering to get up. 3/10 I end up with seconds and only 2/10 do I stuff my face. Not bad eh!!!

And yes hunger pangs do revisit an hour or so later, which is when I eat some fruit or nuts or cheese to appease the body.

What do you do to avoid overeating? Do you feel this deprives the body of nourishment? Do you eat while on your way to office to save time?

  1. You do the right thing by getting up in between. I like eating small portions and developed a habit as a child. I cannot over eat so it works for me. I just need to watch my junk intake sometimes 😛

    1. Ha ha tell me about the junk woman!! Thats very difficult to get rid of from one’s life tho I have made some rules since I hit 40 and eliminated a teensy weensy part of it completely.
